The Greatest Fear

One of the greatest fears most people have is the fear of death. I believe there are four key reasons for this.

  1. We fear we may not be able to complete everything we set out to do before our time is up here on earth.
  2. We all must face death eventually. It is inescapable. We fear the inability to stop it from happening.
  3. We don’t know for sure what eternity will be like for us. The Bible tells us that there is not only life after death, but eternal life so glorious that “no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Corinthians 2:9).
  4. We have to face it alone. Although our loved ones can surround us, the final step into eternity must be taken alone.

We will experience a physical death here on earth because of our sin nature, but as believers in Christ Jesus we are adopted into the family of God and will share in His glory for all eternity. So what then shall we fear? Our life right now becomes mathematically zero in light of eternity. Why do we focus most of our time, energy and attention investing in our earthly lives without giving much thought or attention to the eternal life that is promised to us?

Have an honest talk with your spouse about how you can live life now with more of an eternal perspective. What changes will you make together to live out your earthly lives with the heavenly purpose God created you for?

“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21

More about the promises for our eternal security in Christ…Although the final step into eternity must be taken alone, as believers in Christ Jesus, we do not need to fear it. Romans 8:1-2, 10-11, 14-17  tells us, Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.  And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of His Spirit Who lives in you… For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by Him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.”
